How to further your education when you don’t have the means

Earlier today, a young man sent me a message that reads, “Sir, I need an encouragement from you. I want to further my education I don’t have the means what can I do???”

I have received many of these requests from people and I think it’s high time I addressed it publicly. I had a similar challenge for virtually all my university education – from undergraduate to Ph.D. There are six tips I often share with people in this situation and they are practical tips because those were the things I did and today, I do not owe anything on any of my education to the glory of God. You too can do it.

IF YOU DON’T NEED THESE TIPS, SHARE WITH SOMEONE THAT NEEDS IT, PLEASE… AND THANK YOU.

So, here are the tips:
1. BELIEVE YOU CAN AND YOU WILL
Don’t limit and underestimate yourself. If you don’t believe you can, you will not even try. This is why this is the first step. Your beliefs affect your attitude and your actions.

2. MAKE IT A GOAL AND PUT A TIMELINE ON IT
For instance, when I was doing my Bachelors, I wrote down a goal to do my Masters immediately afterwards. I did not even know where the money would come from, I just believed it would happen and guess what, it happened! So before I completed my bachelor’s degree, I was already applying for Masters with awaiting result – crazy faith, you would say but goals give your life direction.

3. START APPLYING TO SCHOOLS EVEN IF YOU CANNOT AFFORD THEIR FEES
This is a very important step because intentions are good but they don’t produce results. Only actions do. A farmer that sits in his house thinking about how good harvest would look like and fail to go out and plant is a useless farmer. No matter how good his ideas and intentions are. I remember when I was applying for my PhD, while I was still doing my Masters, I wrote to more 20 professors asking for their interest to supervise me. I had more than three proposals written.

4. APPLY FOR THE SCHOLARSHIPS YOU CAN FIND AND TRUST GOD TO MAKE IT HAPPEN
You cannot afford it means, the means must come from somewhere. Apply for scholarships also. Follow scholarship pages on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Every single day, google scholarship opportunities in your target countries. Every scholarship is a provision awaiting a person with vision. If you have a vision, there is provision awaiting you somewhere. But you must find that provision. Even if you pray every day, make sure you are busy looking for scholarships. No one gives you scholarships you don’t apply for. There are tonnes of scholarship out there. No matter how difficult they are to get, people are getting them. I also post scholarship opportunities for people in the IT field on my Facebook timeline and to the glory of God, I can count people who are now in various countries of the world as a result of some of my posts.

5. TALK TO POTENTIAL HELPERS ABOUT YOUR VISION/DESIRE/GOAL TO FURTHER YOUR STUDIES
Talk to potential helpers. I am not saying talk to every Tom, Dick and Harry. In other words, talk to people you know can help. Talk to organisations. Talk to your boss at your place of work (if he/she supports your vision of course), you might be surprised the company is willing to sponsor you. Talk to that uncle you know supports your vision. Talk to your Pastor – pastors usually have connections and they can see ahead in the spirit. Ask the contact person in the school you’re applying to about financial support. You’d be amazed some schools offer financial support. I once had my tuition fee for a whole year paid just by asking! Many other times, God used people to pay my fees because they believe in my vision and they saw I was serious and passionate about where I was going.

6. PRAY ABOUT IT DAILY
This one is key! Because when God orders your step, it’s like you’re a walking miracle. Prayer is an investment in your future. Your prayer today is the bed you lie on tomorrow. Every prayer meeting in your church, attend! Make this your daily prayer point. The more you pray about it, the more God gives you ideas. The more your brain goes to work and you start attracting helpers of your destiny. One prayer I always pray is “Lord, let the helpers of my destiny find me or let me find them – cause our paths to cross and let me identify them”. This pray works like wildfire! If you pray it for 6 months and you don’t see the result, check your relationship with God LOL.

I hope this helps someone. If you need more personal advice regarding what you are doing now, feel free to send me a message or an email.
